Building Home Network - Avoiding IGMP Flooding

Cheers all! I know this will show up as my first post. Apparently my account from way back has been deleted or removed. Either way this is not my first post on DSLReports but it has been a long time. I'm turning to you guys to vet my network design idea and make sure I'm not overlooking anything. My overall goal is to move all Uverse Multicast IPTV traffic to its own broadcast domain and secure my internal network against IGMP packet floods. I'm also looking to create a private and public WiFi access point using multiple SSID's in order to secure my LAN against unknown traffic from friends. Who knows where they're laptops have been! :D First, my list of equipment. Uverse Equipment 1x Pace Uverse Residential Gateway 1x Uverse DVR 2x Uverse STB's 2x Uverse Wireless STB's 1x Uverse Wireless IPTV transmitter Computer Equipment 1x Windows Based Desktop 1x Mac iMac 1x Dell Color Laser Printer 1x QNAP TS-421 NAS w/ dual Ethernet connections Media Devices 1x PS3 1x X-Box 360 3x Western Digital TV Live! Media Players 1x Oppo BluRay Player 1x LG BluRay Player 1x Panasonic SmartTV So there's the list of devices I want to connect. My overall goals are to prevent IGMP traffic flooding on my LAN, distribute HD Video from my NAS to the Western Digital TV Live boxes, and to create a WiFi hot spot for my friends isolated from my LAN. Here's the equipment I'm considering. Netgear JGS524E Switch Netgear WNR3500L-100NAS Wireless Router My idea was to create two additional VLAN's beyond the Native. VLAN 10 and 20 for simplicity sake and disable wireless on the residential gateway. VLAN 10 would be used only for the Uverse IGMP traffic and have nothing but the Uverse STB's and the Uverse Wireless IPTV adapter connected to it. This would have an Ethernet backhaul to the residential gateway. VLAN 20 would be used for local area network traffic. This would allow me to create a separate broadcast domain for the DLNA network traffic from the NAS to the WD TV Live boxes and allow HD video streaming. Connected between VLAN 20 on the switch and the residential gateway would be the Netgear WNR3500L router. This router would have two SSID's. SSID Alpha would be used for my personal use and SSID Beta would be used as a guest WiFi hotspot. This should allow me to connect to VLAN 20 wirelessly without getting hit with the IGMP multicast as well as allow guests to connect only to the residential gateway without being able to access VLAN 20. Is this design solid? Am I missing anything?

Home office and ADSL no longer cutting it

I have some questions regarding business class U-verse. 1)can I connect my current home network without paying for gateway? *my home is Cat 5 wired with 16 port switch to linksys router. 2) my home is wired with 2 Pots lines. Office and home. The office line has one phone connected and DSL on this line as we'll via filter. What are my fax options? I have a second phone number that currently rings twice for my fax. I want a very stable up connection of 1 meg or higher and my current Business ADSL is I believe 768up and 6 meg down. I hear the U-verse business class will drop my bill and be a much stronger connection. We have a small file server the guys pull from connected to my office.

Double digits

With AT&T U-verse voice, I'm experiencing what I call a "double digits" problem. When I dial an 800 number automated service, such as my bank or conference call bridge, and enter my PIN digits, the host is recognizing duplicate digits. Example: if my PIN is 123, the host recognizes "112233". This has been an intermittent problem over the past several weeks. I've rebooted my gateway, used different handsets, and connected the handset directly to the gateway (eliminating the house wiring). I've contacted U-verse support, but they have been unable to diagnose the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Internet service is operating normally. I do not have U-verse TV service. Device details: Gateway: Motorola NVG510 Handsets: Panasonic KX-TG2336 and Panasonic KX-TG9331

Yahoo "Mail Plus" and the new Yahoo "Ad Free Mail"

I'll let this link speak for itself: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/yahoo-account/SLN15803.html?impressions=true I came across this when researching Yahoo Mail Plus. Why? I wanted to dig in, once again, to the issue of "what happens to my Ameritech/SBC/AT&T email addresses if I cancel AT&T Uverse or DSL service." I've had ATT (formerly Ameritech) DSL since (I think) March of 2000. Time and again I almost left because of the price-performance gap between what AT&T offers and what Cable can provide in my well-connected Chicago area. This time it is a no brainer: I can get twice the speed that ATT can provide over my wire pair for $11 less per month than the very best offer the retention folks could come up with; guaranteed for a year, with no contract. Before I dropped AT&T, I wanted to make sure that I had POP access to my legacy Ameritech email address (I use Outlook), as well as support for the countless "disposable addresses" that I have created over the years. Time and again I'd read the various threads on the subject. Yes, my Ameritech address is accessible via Yahoo, so I was pretty sure "all was well." But the fail-safe was to purchase the $19.99 Yahoo Mail Plus. So, I went to explore Mail Plus once again. New twist: it's going away. A very different "Ad Free Mail" product is being put in its place. But: another new -- beneficial to me -- twist: standard Yahoo Mail is being upgraded to include: (1) Disposable Addresses (2) 200 Filters; and (3) POP & Forwarding Those are features, IIRC, previously ONLY available if you had ATT Yahoo or Yahoo Mail Plus. Score!

Discussion of AT&T U-verse related issues should occur here, in the forum dedicated to that service, not on "the home page" which is one guy's soapbox. :uhh:

My experience with AT&Ts retention department

We received an offer from the mail that uverse is giving $100 visa rewards card to existing att dsl customers upgrading their internet to a higher tier on uverse. We had already planned on upgrading to the internet and phone bundle before coincidentally receiving this letter. So I called the number on the letter. After the rep got my information, he told me the price for the 18mbps internet and 200 minutes voice bundle was going to be $81 because we are not new AT&T customers, I mentioned the $50 a month promo price for signing up online and he said the best price he can give is $66 a month for the bundle plus $200 for the equipment and installation and the $100 visa card which arrives in the mail can be used to pay the bill. I agreed and scheduled the installation date. 2 weeks later we received a statement for $81 and the $200 fee. The rep did not apply the promo price. I went to google to find the number for the retention department. After 20 minutes on hold, I got to speak to a rep. I politely mentioned that the promo price wasn't applied to our bill. After looking up the details, the rep offered to give us a promo price for $48 a month for the internet and phone for 1 year. The $100 visa card instead of being sent by mail is going to be credited towards this bill which basically waives the installation. Our $99 equipment fee is split into 3 payments. I double checked our account to confirm the promo price was indeed applied.

AT&T U-Verse and PS3

Does The AT&T U-Verse TV boxes, I have a wired one and a wireless one, use the same ports as a Sony PS3? I've been able to go into the router to open the ports for Xbox live but when I try to do it for the PSN network it tells me that there is a Pinhole conflict detected XXX. I looked at the ports for the tv boxes and it looks like they share some of the same ports. I can only get a moderate nat type on the ps3.

Did I get moved to a K Card?

Just noticed looking at my 3800 RG's stats that I am now seeing "upstream" -- Appears my modem retrained/re synced about a day ago.. ( I only have Uverse TV right now so I didn't notice any drops since I am not watching tv at the time it resynced) prior to that I was not seeing any upstream and had "sync" rates around 59,000 kbps .. This is what I am seeing now: User Rate 32200 kbs 5040 kbs Max User Rate 64000 kbs 9405 kbs Noise Margin 25.0 dB 17.7 dB Attenuation 7.0 dB 7.8 dB Output Power 14.2 dBm -23.2 dBm I am guessing I am now on a K Card instead of F Card.

Requirements for bonded-pair U-Verse?

Okay, here is the deal. A client ordered U-Verse, and was told the fastest they could get was approx. 18 x 1.5. We asked for faster and the AT&T rep (that normally sells them cell phone stuff) said she would check, but came back a day or two later and said "the loop cannot be extended, the fastest is 18 x 1.5." Okay, so they ordered the service and the installer came out to put it in. When the installer was done, he said they should have gone with the bonded 45 x 6. We said, "well, we were told they couldn't extend the loop." At that point, the installer says "well the DSLAM (or whatever he said) is right there in the parking lot, and I have plenty of good pairs to the building." So we got in contact with the salesperson, told her what the installer said, and she said she'd look into it. Some time passed and she got back in touch w/ the customer and told him that it can't be done, that the loop can't be extended, and that the installer misinformed us. So I guess I'd just like some education at this point. It seems to me the terminal to which they need to connect IS right out in the parking lot. Is it possible that the equipment in there is just too old and the installer was just wrong? Is it possible the salesperson is just wrong and is talking to the wrong people to make this happen? If 18 x 1.5 is the best we can do, then so be it. I'd just sort of like to make sure it wouldn't pay to talk to someone that doesn't normally handle cell service, before giving up. Thanks!!!

5301NV Supports Gigabit Or only 100MB Ethernet?

Can't seem to locate a manual for the 5031NV gateway. I'm considering a Synology NAS and it would benefit greatly using gigabit Ethernet. Does anyone know the speed?

Transferring/Billing U-Verse to another household member

My daughter recently got divorced and is moving out of her home. She wants to know whether she can transfer her U-Verse service to her soon to be ex-husband who's staying at the house. The services are currently under her name. And the payments are automatically deducted off her credit card. She's moving to an area where u-verse tv isn't available. So the equipment is going to be useless anyhow. She can only get ADSL2+ internet at her new place. I'd be lending her my motorola adsl2+ modem for this which I was using up until last month with att, before I switched to comcast. Can these two things be done? Thanks

Uverse Line State: Up, Broadband Connection: Down

$

I've been having issues with my Uverse ADSL2+ service where the "Broadband Connection" status changes to "Down" but shows the "Line State" status as "Up". This usually happens at least once a day and has been ongoing for a few months. I've had a Uverse tech come out, he tried a few different things including briefly replacing the modem (NVG510), but nothing has helped. Unplugging the power to the modem and plugging it back in again helps it get the broadband connection back up, but it can get stuck in the "down" state otherwise. It can take a few minutes to get the broadband connection back, or sometimes over an hour. Any ideas as to what this problem is or how to fix it?

Recently I have been having really poor internet speeds to the point where netflix movies wont load and even youtube slowing down. Everything on the ATT site said to download UVRT and upload SS there but i have not gotten any responses yet so I figured i would try here. I attached screens of my UVRT about an hour after resetting everything again today. Any help understanding them would be appreciated.

Got uverse installed yesterday with u300 tv and max plus internet. New aerial drop, cat5 homerun from nid, Cisco 3801HGV gateway, 2 wireless receivers, 1 dvr, whatever wap for the wireless receivers. Before any tv's were hooked up I was getting almost 24mbit down with tv's going I'm testing at almost 22mbit down right now on a wired connection. WiFi however on any device is closer to about 13mbit. Any ideas? -- Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

AT&T DSL + Phone looking to upgrade to U-Verse

I was trying to increase my small business's internet speed. I have 6 phone lines (+1 fax line) and 8 PCs. I also have a wireless router for wireless devices. My neighboring business tried doing the same thing (upgrading from AT&T DSL to U-Verse). It went so horribly wrong, she switched back to DSL but not AT&T's. She was so mad at them she went through Birch for her DSL now. She has vowed to never get internet again from AT&T. Here's what she told me: 1. With U-Verse, they pretty much never had internet for about a month. It was always down. She said it would never stay up for longer than half an hour then it would crash for the entire day. 2. She said it had something to do with what side of the road we were on? 3. She told me it "wasn't an option" for the businesses on this side of the road anymore. Here's my take: I know she doesn't know much about the IT world. From my understanding, U-Verse uses a combination of DSL copper wires with modern-age fiber optic wires. Why would this not work? If you have DSL and you are happy with that service (except the speeds), why would U-Verse be some much less dependable? Our DSL *knock on wood* always works, it's just slow as ever. Any thoughts/suggestions? Why wouldn't it work?
