I've been a happy customer of Sonic.Net DSL for some years with a steady 12 Mbps down / 1.2 Mbps up. But, I am moving to San Jose and Sonic says the new address is 6193 feet behind a remote terminal which blocks their "FUSION" signal.
Ok, alternatives look like AT&T and Comcast. I do not want cable TV, just phone+internet, so U-verse Voice 250 + U-Verse Max 12 Mbps is the less expensive choice. But AT&T wants a 1-year contract and per online chat rep, they do not guarantee any minimum bitrate whatsoever. I don't want to be locked into a 1 year contract if it doesn't work well. The kids will complain if YouTube doesn't work :-).
Is there any way to guess what my real measured bitrate might end up being, without just trying it? The previous owner had cable, so he has no idea about DSL performance at that site.
