[AT&T Fiber] Seeking Update on Southeast Michigan

$

Well I have logged in to DSLReports for the first time in a long time after reading about the bloke in California opening an ad in the WSJ for slow speeds. Back on March 26, 2017 (1433 days ago) I asked in this forum https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30962842-Gigapower-Fiber-Mega-List-Deployed-Being-Deployed? if there were any plans for AT&T to build out fiber in Southeast Michigan, specifically the community in which I reside, Clarkston, Michigan. Turns out once AT&T met their merger obligations r.e. DirectTV then they pretty much stopped the fiber buildouts, from what I can see. Pretty frustrating still getting interwebz over janky 60 year old copper plant that is aerial, mind you, so it would seem reasonable to assume a fiber buildout here wouldn't be that hard to do but alas, here I am, along with thousands of other people in our community still rocking the old, now legacy arguably, FTTN VDSL service. Very tempting to port to Xfinity.

Strategy for contract renewal (best price)

Hi all, I’ve had AT&T gigabit fiber for about 10 months now. I remember recently reading a thread about starting price (on first contract signature) and renewals. I’m looking for recommendations on how to keep the price low. I have internet only and I’m not looking to add tv or phones. Any tips will be welcome

[IP-TV] Future of U-verse TV?

I've had U-Verse TV for several years now (U200) as part of a bundle with 100mbps Fiber (can get 1GB have FTTP) and Unlimited North America Phone when AT&T finally upgraded the IFITL network in my neighborhood. The package I receive, U200, has something like 370 channels, only major limitations are poor OnDemand choices and lack of 4K support, but a lot of that is overcome through other streaming apps. I know that AT&T stopped doing new U-verse TV installs last year, but I'm curious how much longer they will continue support. I've seen various articles that AT&T is looking to offload U-Verse as a package deal with DirecTV. I'm also getting random emails reminding me that HBO Max is part of my DirecTV subscription (despite having U-Verse) and I've noticed there is virtually no U-verse marketing anymore. That being said, I was able to get another $40 off per month on U-Verse TV for another year earlier this month. How much longer will U-verse TV be supported, and how could AT&T possibly sell off U-Verse if the signal runs over their lines?

WiFi speeds with BGW-210

Here's a question regarding WiFi speeds. I have gig service, and get the advertised speeds up/down to my PC via Ethernet. With WiFi to our devices, speed tests show speeds that vary by test but almost always range from about 180-250 down no matter where we are in the house. Is this normal with most of you or are my speeds lower than they should be for gigabit service? I am using two of AT&T's extenders they gave me and probably should only use one; I am just wondering if I am getting what I am paying for. Don't get me wrong, 200 mbps speed is obviously more than sufficient, and we have about 10 devices that use WiFi at various times, but is 25% or lower of advertised speed normal with the 210?

[AT&T Fiber] High Latency and Erratic Speeds

I'm on Gigabit fiber. The last week or two I've noticed my speed tests are all over the place, and my latency is up around 50 - 60ms + (normal is 1 or 2ms). My downstream speeds are consistently bad in real world use (60Mb - 400Mb). One application I use was showing 4% packet loss (which is crazy high). Upstream speeds / latency are also affected, but closer to normal. Gateway is showing speeds in the 800's but latency is 45 - 60ms. Not sure if I have a bad gateway or an issue in ATT's network upstream from my house?

BGW210 dropping dnscrypt packets to cloudflare

I have the BGW210 set in bridge mode and TBH I haven't checked in MANY months. Yesterday I was checking if my internet was OK and noticed that I have a bunch of packets being dropped. I have my router (Orbi) configured to use DNSCrypt and rotate between Cloudflare and Quand9, it looks like the BGW only drops packets to cloudflare. The DNS IP is 1.0.0.2 and the only information in the log is "Invalid IP Packet". This happens once every few minutes, but I expect to have many more calls to the resolve server and also it's not blocking the requests to Quad9. Has anyone see this? Should I disable the packet filtering? I have pretty standard blocking rules on the Orbi to block any incoming traffic and so on so I feel pretty safe. The only downside of completely disabling packet filtering or the firewall would be if I connect another device directly to the BGW's ethernet (no plan, but I've done it a few times). Any tips and thoughts are welcome

2002 Houston Neighborhood w/ Buried Utilities is getting Fiber!

It's my mom's neighborhood in 77070. ~100 homes, straight up middle class. Built during 2002-2004, all buried utilities. So you would think that her neighborhood would be pretty damn low on the list. The copper in the ground should still be good. VRAD right at the entrance to the neighborhood. I saw them bury the lines, they don't take any weird paths. (When we moved in we were the first ones. For 2 weeks all we had was electricity and an Ericsson 1228 on the old AT&T TDMA network if I recall). Speeds offered on the prequal logically decrease as I try addresses farther and farther away from the VRAD. She has bonded pair right now but it's glitchy, so maybe not so good. I am convinced that AT&T just throws darts at a map now, if it lands outside their RBOC areas then they get the day off, and if it lands in one of those depressed BellSouth areas I keep reading about they all have a good laugh and then throw the dart away...

[VDSL] Am I a candidate for a faster profile on vdsl?

I've had ATT Universe internet for a few years and only recently found out there are faster speeds available (for some). I get 28/6 speeds, my install is pair bonded and uses a PACE gateway. I'm curious if anyone could tell from this info above, if I'd be a candidate for a faster profile. (I believe I'm pretty far from the node).

About that 1 gig $49.99 rate not renewing....

It's almost been a year now since I scored AT&T gig service for $49.99 w/no equipment fees. The discount was set to expire on 3/12/21. Called in a bit ago to set it up so the price would not go up. And if that meant turning AT&T off, fine. I scored Spectrum 400/20 service for $29.99 for 2 years, so, in the internet department, I'm good. They were able to renew the $49.99 + no equipment fee for another year! Woop. 20 minute call was all it took. Though, most of that was getting through their stupid fake-typing IVR. With Spectrum and AT&T being load balanced at the firewall, I get some pretty cool speed tests! Cool speed tests and HA for $80 a month? Woop!!!

Realtek RTL8125 2.5gbs slow upload at gigabit sync.

Pc has both an intel 211 and rtl 8125 nic. With the intel I top out at ~990 mbps raw according to task manager on both upload/download. With the rtl it's ~980 mbps down, 950 mbps up. The above numbers are for internet tests. Local lan transfers (between win10 clients) results are the same. The network infrastructure between the two tests is the same. Same cables, switches, etc. Only difference is the nic. Updated to most current rtl driver from their site - https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zoo/category/network-interface-controllers-10-100-1000m-gigabit-ethernet-pci-express-software 2021/02/24 is date of most current driver. Ironically they ask for an email address but still you dl it with bogus info. Email addr for a driver... wtf!@#? Anyway, disabled all the green settings but results are the same. I realize we're talking 40 mbps (5%). If I didn't have the intel nic to compare to i'd just attribute this to tcp overhead, but given the intel nic performs better, it would be nice to optimize the rtl to do the same.. tl;dr realtek is crap!! Edit: Uploaded some pics so you folks don't think i'm totally off my rocker :)

So I looked at my account and I have 50 days left on the promo they had last year for $50. There was actually a message that it ends in 50 days.... I believe it goes up to $70 and may add the RG so maybe $80. Shall I start calling in ? Thanks for the advice.

[VDSL] What do I need to replace ARRIS BGW210-700

$

I have had DSL 6.0 for years now and it is business class. They wanted me to switch to U-VERSE but could not provide fiber closer than 5000 feet. I was skeptical so they let me keep DSL and installed U-VERSE via a VDSL bonded pair and I do get about 45 MBPS down and 12MBPS up. My problem is I need to connect it to my existing firewall and router. BTW, this is business class service. I need to have the ability to place the modem in BRIDGE MODE. The modem they supplied was a ARRIS BGW210-700 which is fancy but it does not have a bridge mode that allows me to connect to my DUAL WAN router. What do you guys suggest I get to give me bridge mode on a bonded VDSL2 service. I need a box that JUST BRIDGES, no Wi-Fi or fire wall, my system does all those needs. TNX in advance

Does the dumb switch method still work to get the BGW210 out of the equation? I'm sick of this BGW210 and trying to find out what my options are now, and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

ATT Fiber Speeds Large Speed Drop In/Out ATT Network

Currently have a NVG589 Gateway with the 1000 plan SpeedTest From Gateway shows 990/990 SpeedTest From PC (using ATT speedtest server) 750/850 SpeedTest From PC (using other ISP's servers tested 3-5) 150/90 Luckily I have two connections and was able to test from a coax 1000 service and the other ISP servers all gave 550+ / 35 (max upload) in order to verify they were not the problem I have been trying to get the wireguard VPN working and was noticing the slow speeds vs coax. I have enabled IP passthrough with IPv6 and Advanced Firewall settings to off and factory reset the device and used no IP passthrough. However no luck. iPerf tests show 950mbps using TCP but only 30mbps using UDP. All the speed test listed above were run without the VPN on a fresh Ubuntu install. Is this common for ATT Fiber service?

Question about cancelling service

I currently have U-Verse ADSL2+, the 18 Mbps package. Comcast recently upgraded the plant in our area so we've switched to cable for faster speeds (I need more than 1 Mbps upload). If I cancel our DSL, does the service stay active until the end of the current billing period (with a full bill), or does it end immediately and I only pay for the days used?
