Well, lately I've seen rolled-up something (coax, fiber, ??) hanging on the poles on our street. Then, 2 days ago they dug a hole on
the corner of our neighbor's property and there are a bunch of black cables/fibers going into a junction box. These are the 4" round
ones junction posts, not the 3" square ones that used to be used for buried copper lines.
Today, a guy knocked on our door and said he'd be digging in our yard to install fiber for AT&T. Well, he left after a while with no digging being done, but maybe he was just sizing up the job.
We have had Charter/Spectrum for almost 20 years, since DSL stopped working due to bad copper plant and we were forced to go to cable as the only other option. I'm looking forward to having two options for internet.

Thinking about switching to fiber - can i use my own router?
Hi all
I am currently using Spectrum as my provider. At&T recently installed Fiber in our neighborhood and has been marketing it door-to-door. I am inclined towards making the switch.
Since I want to use the router I currently have - a Netgear AC1450 with dd-wrt firmware - to serve as the cnetral hub of my home network and provide VPN services to every device on it, I have been looking into the cheapest way possible to do this if I switch to Fiber.
I have read through a lot of threads here and I am super confused. I also don't want to spend a lot of money on new equipment - such as an USG and pfsense routers if I can get similar functionality using my existing router.
If not, it would be great if someone more experienced than me could help me figure out a cost-effective way to "completely disable" the AT&T gateway and just use my own equipment to manage my home network is.
Thanks.

[AT&T Fiber] Using Asuswrt-Merlin to bypass RG
Hi guys,
I successfully bypass AT&T's RG using rt-ac68u with extracted certs from both NVG510 and NVG589
No pfSense, or netgraph, or ubiquiti devices, or dumb switch needed.
I only tested with rt-ac68u, but the method should work for all Asuswrt-Merlin based wireless routers (Please let me know if it doesn't).
Basically, the AiProtection in Asuswrt auto tags net traffic with VLAN, so we only need to update wpa_supplicant which works with extracted certs.
More detail here https://github.com/bypassrg/att.
Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

[AT&T Fiber] Trouble with blocked ports for Pace 5268ac
I want to make sure I have my network set up so that I can do peer-to-peer file sharing like torrents.
I have tried https://canyouseeme.org/ to test some ports but every single one of them fails. Even the so called "common" ports on the right side of the page.
I am using ports that are not listed on the ATT blacklist (https://about.att.com/sites/broadband/network). The status of the gateway's firewall shows the port is allowed. Both TCP and UDP.
The computer I am using is connected by Cat-5e. The Windows 10 firewall is allowing the application and the correct ports. IP4 local address is set to static.
I don't know what else to do. The NAT log in the Diagnostics tab shows 2000+ sessions. Lots of activity. So what is wrong? Why am I unable to be seen from outside?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Fiber gateway called "DSLDEVICE"?
Just got my fiber installed and noticed the gateway is called DSLDEVICE. Is that because they use the same device for DSL?

Actualy Speeds For Fiber?
I got the 300/300 and it appears to be about 20% over provisioned. It's more than fast enough, but it does have the 1Tb cap which I may hit with the TV on all the time. I am thinking of upgrading to the gigabit speed and was wondering if it was over provisioned too? I am guess not because they seem to suggest it peaks at 940Mbps download?

Fiber (?) install in Barrington/Palatine/Deer Park (IL) area???
Wondering if there are any AT&T folks from this area that might know exactly what is being installed -- on S side of Lake Cook road (state highway) from Ela Road, east to Quentin Road -- as well as on Ela Road (from Lake Cook, south to Route 14).
Trucks with reels and reels of orange fiber tubing.
Vermeer machines for pulling/pushing the tubing underground on the highway right-of-way.
I called the Township office. They claim to not know.
I contacted IDOT (they control those roadway right-of-ways).
They know but would not tell me.
I know I can do a FOIA request to try and get information from the permit for this work that has been going on.
I would have asked the guys working but the weather has been horrible and every time there has been an opportunity to pull off the road and ask, no guys at that particular spot. They have at least a dozen or more holes with orange pipe already buried, ends sticking up with snow fence encircling the exposed pipe.
Has to be Comcast or AT&T as there are no other providers out here. As much as people don't like AT&T, I am hoping beyond hope that this fiber is replacing the 30-50 yr old copper wires (I'm on VDSL) and we will "soon" have fiber available.
I am just wondering if anyone that posts here might know . . . .
TIA

Werid Fiber Pricing?
Does this make sense? Why is "Internet 1000" less than "Internet 300"? I am afraid if I switch something will go wrong.

Brand new account and still got "retentions" deal!
I recently got new fiber service at $60 for 300/300 with 1Tb cap. I have had service less than a week and was concerned about the cap. I was thinking of upgrading to gigabit service (even though the speed difference is largely irrelevant) just to get the unlimited service without a usage cap.
I called retentions and they were able to add "basic" TV which includes unlimited data and actually LOWER my rate by $1. I don't want/need the TV service... the rep literally suggested I could just put the box in the closet. So now I have 300/300 unlimited for $59/mo!
PLUS... I got ANOTHER $100 gift card and free HBO/Cinemax for 3-months!
Moral of the story: CALL RETENTIONS even on a brand new account!

[AT&T Fiber] Thinking of switching - A few questions first
I currently have Cox Cable (gigabit down, 35mbps up) and a 1TB data cap for $105/month. It seems that I can switch to ATT fiber (1000/1000) with NO data cap for $80/month for the first year, and $100 after that. The biggest reason I want to switch is because of the data caps. I struggle to stay under 1TB and I despise the idea of paying more for extra data in what is obviously a money grab from Cox. Other than that, I'm completely satisfied with my service.
I do have a few reservations about switching...
1) I know there are bypass methods out there for not having to use the provided RG, but are these necessary with newer firmwares? Can you still get good speeds on a very crowded network (I have 50+ devices connected to my router) if I put the RG in passthrough mode and turn off WiFi?
2) Does anyone have any issues with throttling from Usenet downloads? I currently connect to a few usenet servers, and when I tried out ATT about 2 years ago (1000/1000 package), it seems my downloads were maxing out at about 100mbit, despite my Cox connection saturating the full gigabit connection. When I tried a few years ago, I used giganews, but I have since switched to newsgroupdirect and newsdemon. Really curious if anyone here on gigabit uses either of these providers and how your speeds are. I know this is kind of a grey area, so feel free to PM any details if you are so inclined.
Thanks in advance for any input!

[AT&T Fiber] Is anyone with the bgw210 able to receive ipv6 ping?
goodness, my networking is barely what i would call rudimentary, but my google-fu is strong and ive been at this for two days.
disabling Drop incoming ICMP Echo requests to Device WAN Address in the gateway firewall immediately allows me to receive ipv4 ping, but disabling Drop incoming ICMP Echo requests to Device LAN Address does not allow ipv6 whatsoever.
the end-game is getting icmp echo requests through to which ive added windows firewall rules to allow, but outside of being able to ping ipv4, i get nothing.
ive tried every single solitary online tool that exists to ping my IP. (again rudimentary networking understanding) so ive tried with my ipv6, my temporary ipv6, and my link-local ipv6.
nothing, nothing, and nothing.
disabled packet filtering entirely. Turned off the routers firewall entirely. added windows firewall rules.
Im at a brick wall now. Not sure if this is an ATT side issue, or if anyone can advise?

Bricked BGW210
I've managed to brick my BGW210. It still turns on, but doesn't finish booting. I've hooked a TTY up to the UART pins and it appears to go through most of the boot process until it gets to a kernel panic.
Is there any built-in rescue mechanism that you know of? TFTP, USB rescue, etc.
This is not my primary device, so i'm not out of service, but I'd prefer not to junk it if I can rescue it!
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
-Wes
