ATT TrueBridge Mode for for Ubiquity Security Gateway (USG)

So, I have taken the plunge and replaced my PFSense firewall with a Ubiquity USG. This is an affordable device, around $110 on Amazon, and is the perfect companion to Ubiquiti Unifi wireless access points and its controller if you happen to use any. For the same reason as "rockstar" did with his PFSense thread, I decided to open up a separate topic for those searching for information, without having to go through the "True Bypass" monster thread. During my research before purchasing, I came across this gem: https://blog.taylorsmith.xyz/att-uverse-modem-bypass-unifi-usg/ It explains in clear steps what you have to do. The most difficult portion is the trimming of the .json file somewhere halfway. I spent a good 20 minutes on it, and the examples that were given on the site above were of good help. Remember: when you start following the guide above, you will eventually disconnect from the internet, so make sure you have all the sites open you want open, and have all the files you need before proceeding. Make sure you read every step, don't skip any. PROS: Latency decrease. As if the gigapower itself wasn't good enough, a ping to 8.8.8.8 has changed from 3-4ms to a solid 2ms. If you are further away from bigger datacenters, the latency decrease can actually be noticeable. Speed: Speedtests are the same, really.... 930/930 to 940/940, the maximum you can push through gigabit. No change. DPI: This is with deep packet inspection enabled on the USG, so you can really keep check to see where your data is going. This is actually a cool feature, it shows you exactly how much hundreds of applications take in data, ranging from Facebook to P2P/Torrent to Netflix to OneDrive to Speedtest.net to Gmail to online games, you name it, and all displayed in a userfriendly and accessible way. CONS: No decent IPv6 support yet. Ubiquiti is working on it, and current firmware has "alpha" support for it, but it will be coming soon. If you need IPv6 NOW, don't use this.... if you can wait a few months till Ubiquiti really has their IPv6 ironed out, we may be able to get it to work in a similar fashion. It may actually work now, I just haven't gotten around to really testing it yet. NEUTRAL: I have static IP's. I have them mostly "just because", for the geekness of it, to run servers etc.... but the reality is I managed to consolidate all those back to the one DHCP IP for now (which never changes anyways), so I can take my sweet time figuring out how to get them to work. I'm sure its not that hard, just will take some digging.

[AT&T Fiber] ATT vs Non-ATT equipment

I am getting ready to move down to South Carolina to start a new job and they have gigafiber available as an option. What would I gain by not using ATT equipment and using my synology router rt2600ac? It's a 2 bedroom apartment and really all I care about is being able to use openvpn to remote in from the office and be able to hit my plexserver. I ask this as I have done this process before with fios and it was a PITA having to deal with getting the verizon dvr's to work with a 3rd party router and would really not have to reinvent the wheel again.

Pixelation with no errors.

We've recently been getting pixelation on both of our televisions (1 wired, 1 wireless) on a random basis. However when I go to check the statistics on our RG I see absolutely no errors except for occasional a few FEC errors. A screenshot is attached. Any idea what could be causing this?

[VDSL] Is it possible to have a 2 AT&T modems sharing the same lines?

So, I like to download stuff quite a bit, but on our AT&T Internet 50 plan it takes quite some time to download things. Our 2 pairs of VDSL2 line have good enough stats to handle more speed but AT&T won't allow more speed. I was also rummaging around our box of cables and connectors and came across a DSL splitter (picture included above). Then, I asked myself this question, "Could I put 2 modems on the same 2 lines?" Now I am here to see if that is true, I already plugged the splitter into the provided AT&T DSL wall plate and the one modem into the splitter. I still get perfect speed test results. Line stats included above. I greatly appreciate any responses. Thanks! Note: We are on the AT&T u-verse lightspeed platform and have a loop length of roughly 1300-1800 ft. Modem : Arris NVG589

[VDSL] Am I being lied to by AT&T?

I currently have AT&T's Internet 50 DSL service and I was hoping that there would be faster speed available. I know that DSL is a service that degrades over how far you are away from the DSLAM. Anyways, when I looked into higher speeds available there weren't any, and the only option is to switch to Spectrum for their faster cable broadband service. We are very happy with our current AT&T service (besides the internet speeds) so I started to do some research on the maximum speed of a certian DSL line. Then, I started to poke around in the router settings and came upon the broadband status section and I found out that the speeds we have currently are only about 35% of the downstream max attainable rate so that's about 65% percent of overhead which seems weird to me. Also, it looks like our line statistics are good too. We have a bonded 50/10 profile and the next profile up is 75/18 and the next one is 100/20. We are at a loop length of roughly 1300 ft to 1800 ft. Included is our line details. So, could we get a higher internet speed based on these statistics? Thanks in advance!

Does AT&T UVerse NVG599 Firmware cause browsing issues?

On 06/01/2019, I refreshed a web page that was opened in my browser, "ERR_CONNECTION_TIME_OUT" error started to occur. NVG599 was on firmware version "9.2.2h4d16" at that time. Half of my bookmarks library has been giving me time-out errors for 15 straight days. A few of them loads but very slow. However, sites like Google, Lifewire, Youtube loads without any issue (working ones seem to be located in the US). The browsing issue affects all my devices and browsers without exception. Also, on 06/15/2019, there was a firmware version change to "9.2.2h.11d23" (I assume it was an update). But my browsing issues has not been resolved magically by AT&T's firmware update. I am desperate. Please help. I have no idea what the problem is, not even sure if it is AT&T's DNS Propagation Error or NVG599 Firmware Issue. I have tried the following to troubleshoot more than once in the past 15 days, but none worked so far: - NVG599 Router: unplug for overnight; factory reset (hold red button for 30 seconds); - NVG599 Setup Page: disable IPV6; restart button (soft reboot); - OS + NVG599: unplug NVG599 for 20 seconds and turn off PC for 1-2 mins, then restart NVG599 til its on service and turn on PC. - OS DNS: "ipconfig /flushdns"; disable IPV6 and use default IPV4; change DNS settings to Google or OpenDNS; - Browsers: Clear cookies and history (everything); reinstall browsers; clear browsers DNS cache; reset "Internet Options" in Windows; - I used "tracert" and "ping" commands to troubleshoot one of my bookmarks having trouble recently in case someone wants to look at it. I am not expert. All I can tell is that "tracert" did not get to final destination. And if I "ping" those visible IPs in the "tracert" output, most of them gives a "Packets 100% loss" response. Here is a sample output to one of the website: Please read attachment.

[VDSL] Do these stats, need a tech visit?

Friend of mine has u-verse businesses, which I recommended. So my friend called up to help him set up his 2 modems to bond them together as a total one speed since he has 25/5 + 2 modems, bonding them into 50/10 through his third-party firewall. anywho, after setting up I noticed on the dsl-stats just caught me off guard about these errors, I asked him if he any internet issues, he replied no that I know it. So we called the business support team, not sure if the offshore clueless rep had any clue or was he right. since he told me its fine to have crc errors, so I told him "You know this a business class right, not trying act like a dick" Rep pretty much shrugged it off and said don't worry your internet is fine. So anyone here since, he has two modems labeled by M1 and M2 What do you think about that the stats? Should we get a tech out or everything is fine? Since I don't wanna annoy more reps. lol Double checking, when my friend got the service installed, his modems were installed on the N card in the vrad. edit: Forgot to mention, we are using cat6 all the way to the demarc point, and this bonded pair for each modem. No interference since these cables are far away as possible from the power cables. Edit2: The modems were rebooted a week ago.

[AT&T Fiber] Fiber availability

Hi, I used the forums a few years ago to finally get DSL connected to my house whereas my order kept getting rejected via the online ordering system or over the phone talking to a live customer rep. Several of my neighbors had the service and I kept getting denied, but thanks to you I was able get an engineer to do some research and finally get the service. Now, I am hearing that some folks in my area are starting to get access to AT&T fiber and I was again wondering if it might be an available option for me to upgrade away from my 3mb DSL connection. Thanks, Bruce McDougald Moderated: removed address and phone number. Note to OP: It is unwise to post such private information in a public forum. If somebody is able to help, and needs that information, they can contact you via a PM (private message).

[AT&T Fiber] Any way to bypass att modem using ASUS GT-AC5300?

Was curious if anyone else was using this specific router with att 1000 plan. If so, the options in the advanced settings have all sorts of options that look like could be use to "simplify" bypassing the modem. Don't really wanna shell out $135 for an USG. But I will if I have to if I can't get around their modem. Or if anyone else that uses this router, what were your go to settings? I tried putting the router in AP mode and it significantly improved my wifi speeds and kept them consistent.

Moving from Mediacom to Uverse dsl today

Yep the installer is here at the house. I ended up getting 100Mbps dsl and Uverse tv. Mediacom was just way too pricey and priced themselves out of a customer. Here's to hoping att can fill the void!

Pre-owned BGW210-700: How does one proceed?

OK, so say I buy a BGW210-700 on eBay to replace my crappy Pace with the broken DMZ. How do I proceed with that? Do I just plug it in and it magically just syncs and works? Just wondering, since getting one from ATT seems to be a difficult task, and they're only about $30 on eBay...

[AT&T Fiber] CAT5e/CAT6 or CAT7?

I have to move my router from its current location and I want to take the opportunity to upgrade the wiring. Most of the wiring is of different length and quality and I was wondering if I would benefit by changing the wires to the same size and category. Right now they are CAT5 or CAT5e. Is it a waste of time and money? What's your opinion.

Pondering moving to ATT fiber from Mediacom

Hello everyone! I'm wanting to know what your experiences are with ATT fiber. Mainly the 100Mb package since that's the fastest that's available in my area. Currently I'm on the 500Mb plan with Mediacom and we are moderate users. Say we have a gaming pc, playstation, stream youtube (via mobile devices), and occasionally watch Netflix, Hulu, Amazon prime via 4k tv's. Also I work from home but that's pretty light traffic typically. I know that cable uses a shared line where as fiber uses a dedicated line. So my question is what if any hiccups might I see via moving to 100Mb fiber from our 500Mb cable connection? The reason behind this is cost essentially. I can get the same package from ATT ($105ish a month) minus the bandwidth compared to what I'm currently spending with Mediacom ($170ish). Also if I were to drop down to 100Mb with Mediacom it would knock me down to $145ish after promotions and such. The thing I like is that ATT would be a 100Mb connection both up and down as well as a dedicated line, but, in the scheme of things I really am not sure how much of a difference that would really make. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

[AT&T Fiber] My long wait is finally, mercifully over.

More than two full years later, despite AT&T's Fiber literally being strung across my alley for the better part of that time-- AT&T has finally lit up my address for Fiber. My install is scheduled for the 30th of June. https://about.att.com/story/att_fiber_now_available_in_greater_milwaukee_area.html I jumped on the 1000/1000 tier for $70/mo. A great deal compared to my 940/35 offering from Spectrum for $130ish a month.

True Bridge mode on pfSense with IPv6 via netgraph

Hi all... I know True Bridge mode has been a heavily discussed topic. Most have had success with the VLAN swap trick or via ebtables or eap_proxy in Linux. However, neither of those worked for me. I just wanted to share my notes on getting things working in pfsense. Hopefully it helps! https://github.com/aus/pfatt

[AT&T Fiber] Using Asuswrt-Merlin to bypass RG

Hi guys, I successfully bypass AT&T's RG using rt-ac68u with extracted certs from both NVG510 and NVG589 No pfSense, or netgraph, or ubiquiti devices, or dumb switch needed. I only tested with rt-ac68u, but the method should work for all Asuswrt-Merlin based wireless routers (Please let me know if it doesn't). Basically, the AiProtection in Asuswrt auto tags net traffic with VLAN, so we only need to update wpa_supplicant which works with extracted certs. More detail here https://github.com/bypassrg/att. Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

[AT&T Fiber] New Installation Questions - Houston Area, especially

$

Hi all. I have been receiving mailers for months now offering AT&T Fiber. I have several months left on my Comcast contract, but would like to move to AT&T or Toast.net at that time. I am hoping to get a few answers to some questions that haven't been covered in my reading. I'm outside of the Houston area on roughly 1 acre. Service would come in off the poles at the NE rear of my property. The bottom line is labeled fiber optic cable and has a service figure-eight on it. There is a 3' tall telephone (POTS) cylinder right below that that I assume will be switched out with something for GPON. That could depend on the neighbor that shares it. I haven't used it since UVerse VDSL years ago. Measurements: 165' south of there is the NID for the unused phone service, the entry point for the cable, and the power meter on the side of my no HVAC detached garage (NE corner of house). Garage and house width: 100' Property width: 135' House width (E to W): 100' House depth (N to S): 50' It's a two story house with the office on the first floor. There is no central network cabinet and no conduit. The office is where I really need the wired connections, so it's where the switch and router are located. The office is on the SW corner of the house, as far from the NID as is possible. There's an easy path from the garage through the attic to a spot above the office, but there's no conduit, pull string, or much of anything to facilitate that final 20'. Questions: 1) How would/should the connection be made to the NID? Would it be run 350' on exterior fiber that would need to be buried in the yard (with sprinkler system to avoid) to a new location on the opposite side from the current, unused NID or run a much more protected 165' to the old NID location and run ~175' via the house and covered run between the house and garage? 2) Would the tech be able to terminate fiber off a spool and allow for placement of the ONT in the office? Would really like to have it in air conditioning and on the UPS in my office instead of hot in the garage and directly on an outlet. If he can, then I can work on that last section of wall to make the job easy. 3) If not, would the tech be likely to be willing to use a fiber that I run in advance? (175' 9-125, simplex SC APC fiber) Thanks!

[AT&T Fiber] Static IP(s) Not Working

I have submitted over 4 work orders to get a block of 5 usable static IPs to work with my gig symmetric Gigapower service. Every time they send a tech out it gets escalated around and no resolution comes of a call or onsite visit. I have been promised the tech's will escalate it to a manager and never does. I have read how others have successfully utilized the static IPs on their gigapower service but I have AT&T stumped. They have swapped both the ONT and BGW210-700 RG. I have had the NOC provisioning agents change the block of static IPs over 4 times. I can show that the traceroute dies upon the fourth or fifth hop when trying to use the static IP on a device. However the traceroute is successful on a device that sits behind the DHCP provided public routable address. What are my options? I don't want to keep paying for a service I can't use!

So, my place in Columbus finally shows fiber 1000 available for order! Great! I can get it installed and do the workaround to avoid the RG! Well. I ordered a week ago, got confirmation, selected today for install from 1-3pm! 3pm rolls around, I’ve heard nothing.. then 3:30 so I call to check.. there’s a problem with the order but nobody had bothered to call me? Well this is symmetrical fiber so I decide to pursue this, but my 500/50 from the cable company is adequate for my needs.. but hey more speed for the same price! Guy chats with engineering, dispatch, and some other department simultaneously.. well they first say my address doesn’t validate? - well that’s a lie as it shows validated.. next excuse was a facility issue, now they’re saying no actual install ticket was created? Problem is, I’m only home nights and only have a few days I can have someone stand in for me, and one of them totally wasted her day doing that for me. I’m really just over AT&T and it’s disorganized self, as one department simply doesn’t talk to the other, and nothing ever gets done //end rant
