2 years back, AT&T deployed U-Verse service (voice/Internet/TV) to my parents neighborhood. They signed up for the Voice+Internet+TV, because of a $200 cashback promotion offered at the time. (There was no contract required to get the cashback, my parents cancelled TV after the first month without any issue.)
Before this, they had AT&T DSL, and owned their own router (2wire 2701HG.) With U-Verse, they were forced to rent a different router to use with the U-Verse service; with a monthly charge of $5.99.
Reading this forum, it seems like most people were able to purchase their own U-verse router (from AT&T), and avoid the monthly rental fee. but even for those U-verse internet customers who don't own their own router, I got the impression that the rental fee was less than $5.99/mo.
Are my parents being overcharged?
