Background: My parents are in their 80s and living on the other side of the country. About five years ago I hooked them up with AT&T DSL. They also have POTS via AT&T.
I am the email point of contact for their AT&T account (I get the "Your AT&T online bill is ready to be viewed" emails). I never received a Uverse email (unless it went to gmail spam).
Recently my father apparently received a call from an AT&T woman saying they had to change their internet and it would be free etc. He didn't understand what she was talking about (either because it was too technical or because she had a heavy accent). He asked her if she could send him something about it via postal mail and she said that wasn't possible. I don't know how the call ended.
When he first described it I thought it was just a call trying to get him to upgrade speeds or a package. But after poking around online now it seems perhaps it was a call about the forced upgrade to Uverse.
Questions:
- What is the best number to call AT&T to ask about this?
- Can they switch just their DSL to Uverse and retain the POTS landline?
- How seamless is the transition? It sounds like they'd get a new modem/router to replace the existing one? And then all devices that use wifi will need to be re-configured (ugh).
- They have TV service via a cable company (and I believe they actually still have some type of analog cable, no set top box) and I don't believe they are interested in doing any bundling. They're happy with their current TV set up. They're happy with POTS phone. I don't want even more AT&T technical problems introduced.
thanks,
↧
