I just helped my neighbors move from Comcast to an AT&T U-verse double-play package (TV and Data.) AT&T REALLY didn't want to make TV an option on the website; I had to keep clicking off recommended packages and view all of them, but they didn't like the outages they've had with DirecTV in the past.
Take a look at this page, and click HD Channels only (image attached.) http://www.att.com/u-verse/shop/channel-lineup.jsp
EVERY SINGLE HD channel that might be available shows up with the word optional, but you have to hover over each and every one with a cursor on a computer for a fraction of a second to see the specific requirements for each channel. The heading says "Add HD for $10/mo" for everything except the U450 package, which includes HD, but doesn't display the included channels differently from those that require extra fees, one example being Smithsonian HD, which requires the additional HD Premium Tier package for $7 per month on the U200 package or upgrading to U300 service.
Requiring a hover to see options for every channel on a scrolling list with that many options is poor design at best, and misleading at most, when color codes or something more readily apparent would make more sense.
I'm not ranting, as I've resolved this issue for my neighbors thanks to help from an AT&T site member and a referral to upper level appeals. I am trying to promote some awareness of the problem, in the hopes of preventing others from falling into the pit of subscribing to a service unaware of exactly what you won't be getting. The DirecTV line, Comcast's lineup, or any other I've checked recently are all significantly clearer about what you get with what package.
