AT&T 2701HG-B 2Wire - slow internet speeds - SOLVED

Hello, I have Uverse Max 18 (fastest in the area and I have a AT&T 2701HG-B 2Wire which I understand is pretty old, but the last guy said they wouldn't upgrade it). IT seems this router is poor at traffic management with heavy bandwith consumers on the network. I have a complicated network setup with many devices on the network. I had put my router in AP mode to use the at&t router to manage all traffic. Well I've been having intermittent slow speeds and I found a solution so I post it here for helping others. I recently added webcams with internet monitoring - these chew up a lot of upload bandwidth. So I've been having the 2wire router do all traffic management with my internal router on the same subnet - so that I can use the uverse remote smartphone app as that seems to be require the same subnet. But speeds were a dismal 2-8 mbps down and 0.5 up. well I decided to change it back to where the personal router (netgear) is handling routing on a different subnet - traffic management is much better using my own router than AT&T and the crawling speed problem solved. speeds back up to 18-20mbps and 2.5 down. Anyone else notice this? Would upgrading to new uverse HW have helped? (if AT&T will do that). Anyway for now problem seems to be solved. For the uverse smartphone app - it seems to still require the same subnet so I just hooked up another old router in AP Mode _ I'll connect to that SSID for remote control app management only. Kinda silly but hopefully att fixes their app (seems their automatic detection for ESPN, AT&T still works on the web, it recognizes the cascaded router setup fine).
