Using own router with 3801 RG

I have a friend that has a 3801 RG and the wireless sucks on it. She wants to use her own router. What do I have to do to set her up like that? If she doesn't use a separate router, can she buy a NVG589 from AT&T? -- In GTA, only one thing matters. Work it, Steal it, Sell it!
