24mb to 45mb upgrade not quite working

So my tech just left a little while ago from installing my upgrade from 24mb to 45mb. He was here about 3.5 hours, at least half of which was spent IMing with someone back at base to try to figure out why the speeds were not any faster on any wifi device. He swapped modems to rule out hardware. I am getting full speed, in fact around 50mb hardwired to the gateway, but wifi speeds are topping out around 22-24mbps which is actually slower than they were previously. Tech said I am 900 feet from the vrad which is possibly why I am usually above promised speeds. I've looked at a few threads and tried to change channels between 6 and 11 (he had it on 6, not on auto, said that usually worked better), as well as changing from b/g/n to n only, with no effect. We discussed adding a router hardwired on top of the gateway to get the speed up, he said it might work but no guarantee and att would not support that option. The main problem for me is that my primary computer is not located physically in a place where hardwiring to the gateway is feasible. Any thoughts from the experts here?
