I'm currently on the slowest 768k AT&T DSL. The price just keeps going up and up, the price gap between it and U-Verse is shrinking, so I've been thinking it may be time to upgrade. AT&T says I can only upgrade to U-Verse, I guess they are phasing out DSL in my area.
When I start the process to upgrade online, it adds $100 for installation, and $100 for a "2Wire 3800HGV" residential gateway. I guess there's no way around the installation, but can I buy my own modem to waive the $100 fee? There didn't seem to be a way to remove it from the cart. I would only be using U-Verse internet, no TV, no telephone.
I have read the only compatible modems would be used AT&T ones from eBay and Craigslist. I'm fine with that, as they are a lot cheaper than $100. However, the FAQ says the modem I can use would be dependent on the technology in my area. I don't know if in my area they use ADSL2+, VDSL, FTTP, xPON, or how far away I am from a VRAD. How would I find out these things?
