I have two broadband connections - not originally by design but I'm glad I do. I changed over from Direct TV over a year ago. I ordered a U-Verse account for TV, 2 phones and internet. Since I have a business line, I ordered Comcast Business for that one phone line but it was only about $20 extra to get their entry level broadband so I went ahead with it. Both were installed within a few weeks of each other. U-Verse should be faster (18 vs 12) but I use Comcast exclusively because of never resolved performance issues with U-Verse.
I've had U-Verse out here multiple times. They've replace the router twice but only because they can't figure out the problem. My circuit tests very well and I'm rated for up to 56M so it should easily handle my little 18M account. However, the speed of the internet fluctuates over time from acceptable to downright awful. You can watch downloads almost stop, start, stop and start. Ping times go from OK to bad. I've had a single laptop connected directly to the 2Wire with a technician standing there with me. After much gnashing of teeth, I've given up on them and relegated the kids to the U-Verse circuit while my wife and I use Comcast. A couple times a week I have to put up with the kids moaning and groaning that they can't play their games.
Has anything changed in the last year that would be worth the trouble of picking this back up? New routers? Other people figuring out the underlying problem?
I will note that a customer of mine just "upgraded" (the forced kind) from AT&T DSL to U-Verse last week and she hates it. She has a 5 person office and everyone complains about the speed even though on paper it should be running 3 times as fast. As with my circuit, you can watch speed tests complete with starts and stops. Her business is a good 20+ miles from me in a different city.
