[AT&T Fiber] PFsense, Dumb switch, and the little white ONT

I have tried everything I can. Used all of the recommended switches, even had a friend come over that does the dumb switch at his house with no issues. But for whatever reason mine will not bypass. So here is my setup. 1000 up and down I have the Small white ONT device that gets its power from the wallwart in my garage. https://cdn.michaelkummer.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/att_gigapower_ont.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&ssl=1 BGW210 gateway pfsense 3100. Is anyone able to confirm they are bypassing with the small white ONT? What else should I try

Why AT&T uVerse network latency always start at 25ms?

Just curious, the few AT&T uVerse VDSL Internet connections I've seen, always have a first hop latency from the modem to the AT&T network of about 25ms. Is AT&T hiding hops inside it's network? A peer behind the sheaths of fiber would be entertaining, puns intended. :-)

[AT&T Fiber] New gateway to support new rates?

Toast dropped me a note today, said they have to swap out my gateway for a new one in order to support the new lower rates. I called them and chatted for a bit; Steve was very pleasant. They will set up a truck roll for this. I find it interesting that this is "to support the new, lower rate". Hmmm. Steve made it clear, this wasn't optional. Also: I asked if the existing settings from my existing gateway would migrate to the new gateway. I remember seeing this mentioned here not too long ago, and someone said that yes, that would happen in the AT&T world. Well, Steve told me I would be setting it up all fresh again, with no migration of my settings. Does anyone know, is the migration of settings for an AT&T customer a real thing like I think I read here lately? If so, that might be a function of the AT&T system the AT&T customer is in. If I don't get that benefit, then I'm most certainly not an AT&T customer at that level. Anyway, if they're going to this expense to replace a year and a half old gateway that works fine, my guess is that everyone will get this, they will change their systems around internally, and bypass will be off the table way sooner than later.

https://www.fiercetelecom.com/telecom/at-t-fiber-debuts-new-pricing-across-three-tiers-offers-unlimited-data-for-fiber-customers I thought this was interesting. While the article says they are new it is more like AT&T is bringing back the old tiers at new prices and just getting rid of data caps on the fiber.

Router for U-Verse

I have the Arris NVG589 gateway. (I've had it for 5 years) My DSL internet package is 50 mbs. I'm achieving the max speed on the wired connections. The wireless is much slower and the coverage is not good. Can someone recommend a router that I can use to improve my wireless connections?

USG3 Gateway and AT&T Uverse

Hi I just saw a video how to bypass the BGW210 with a USG3 gateway and it looks like I have the knowledge to do it, however, the video only talks about the AT&T fiber and it doesn’t mention the TV Service or Landline. Would USG3 method work with 3 services. Internet, TV and landline? Thank You Mario

ATT TrueBridge Mode for for Ubiquity Security Gateway (USG)

So, I have taken the plunge and replaced my PFSense firewall with a Ubiquity USG. This is an affordable device, around $110 on Amazon, and is the perfect companion to Ubiquiti Unifi wireless access points and its controller if you happen to use any. For the same reason as "rockstar" did with his PFSense thread, I decided to open up a separate topic for those searching for information, without having to go through the "True Bypass" monster thread. During my research before purchasing, I came across this gem: https://blog.taylorsmith.xyz/att-uverse-modem-bypass-unifi-usg/ It explains in clear steps what you have to do. The most difficult portion is the trimming of the .json file somewhere halfway. I spent a good 20 minutes on it, and the examples that were given on the site above were of good help. Remember: when you start following the guide above, you will eventually disconnect from the internet, so make sure you have all the sites open you want open, and have all the files you need before proceeding. Make sure you read every step, don't skip any. PROS: Latency decrease. As if the gigapower itself wasn't good enough, a ping to 8.8.8.8 has changed from 3-4ms to a solid 2ms. If you are further away from bigger datacenters, the latency decrease can actually be noticeable. Speed: Speedtests are the same, really.... 930/930 to 940/940, the maximum you can push through gigabit. No change. DPI: This is with deep packet inspection enabled on the USG, so you can really keep check to see where your data is going. This is actually a cool feature, it shows you exactly how much hundreds of applications take in data, ranging from Facebook to P2P/Torrent to Netflix to OneDrive to Speedtest.net to Gmail to online games, you name it, and all displayed in a userfriendly and accessible way. CONS: No decent IPv6 support yet. Ubiquiti is working on it, and current firmware has "alpha" support for it, but it will be coming soon. If you need IPv6 NOW, don't use this.... if you can wait a few months till Ubiquiti really has their IPv6 ironed out, we may be able to get it to work in a similar fashion. It may actually work now, I just haven't gotten around to really testing it yet. NEUTRAL: I have static IP's. I have them mostly "just because", for the geekness of it, to run servers etc.... but the reality is I managed to consolidate all those back to the one DHCP IP for now (which never changes anyways), so I can take my sweet time figuring out how to get them to work. I'm sure its not that hard, just will take some digging.

Native IPv6: Austin Area

Up until about 3-4 weeks ago, I had Native IPv6 working for my AT&T Fiber, using OpenWRT with pulled certs from an old modem. About 3-4 weeks ago, started having sluggish internet / strange loading behavior. Ultimately killed the WAN6 connection, which resolved the problems. Each time I bring the connection up, I end up with an fe80::... gateway, which I understand to be link-local - and running through a test like https://test-ipv6.com/ results in not being able to detect an IPv6 address. Wanted to see if anyone was facing similar problems / found a fix.

Had it with BGW210 - switched to Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro!

Like many gigabit customers here I finally had enough of the BGW210. The speed test results are misleading... yes, they show you're get the advertised speeds, but that's really misleading. Most of us rarely, if ever, max out a gigabit connection. What we DO want is fast response on web access, where the BGW210 lags. For reference, I have a small home with 30+ devices connecting. My Plex server, Xbox, Hue, and TV's are hard wired. The rest is Sonos, Ring, laptops, iPads, phones, robot vac, air filter, my bed, and other IoT devices I'm forgetting. Since switching from Spectrum to AT&T gigabit Uverse, everything felt slow and laggy despite speed and latency tests looking great. Like most people, I hate that AT&T makes us use (and pay for) their crappy gateway. If you're going to force people to pay for your router don't pretend it's optional and include it in the price, don't add it on like it's an "optional" item, right? I replaced the BGW210 with the UDMP and Nano HD AP. For now I'm using their fake bridge mode "passthrough" but looking at the BGW210 I can see it's still doing NTA tables. Gonna try the dumb switch bypass method today, and then maybe the more permanent certs method. In any case, if you too find the BGW210 laggy but can't put your finger on it then wonder no more. Everything is much snappier without it!

I have been trying to run the line monitor but it hasn't seems to work in a while. Anyone else? Update: Yes, they're down and have been down. Unclear if they'll be back. Too bad, I liked the feature of being able to see the performance others were getting.

[AT&T Fiber] Overprovisioned 1 gig?

Just got fiber installed. Fiber is direct the SFP (outdoor -> patch -> indoor) on BGW320-505. I was playing with a SFP+ to RJ45 and could get faster than 1 gig downloads but the uploads would suck (600~). So I bought a USB 2.5G adapter and plugged directly to the multi-gig port of the modem. (IP passthrough is on) It seems like the 1 gig is kind of overprovisioned but it's weird. Some things seem to be stuck at 950 down like fast.com and the google speedtest but there's multiple speedtest.net servers that will go 1260Mbps down / 1111Mbps up and the windows task manager reports 1.3G receive speeds so it isn't just a software error.

[AT&T Fiber] AT&T Fiber rollout strategy

Hello, I am sure other people have asked this but is there any strategy to where AT&T decides to roll out Fiber? I see fiber being installed around my area, but I hear it’s mostly due to new homes, and apartment buildings going in. We have 2-3 new neighborhoods being built next to us and I saw AT&T trucks outside. I stopped to ask if they were installing fiber, and they said no they are bringing regular VDSL2 to the new neighborhood. I don’t get what makes them decide where they want to install fiber and where not to. I currently live in a suburb of Detroit. Only thing I can get is Comcast, or 25mbps att service. Thanks.

[AT&T Fiber] Another ATT Gateway Bypass Thread

Hi All, There is enormous amount of information and I've been reading for a few hours on bypassing the ATT gateway, versus DMZ+, IP Passthrough ect. I have the gigapower and the Pace 5682 gateway. I currently do not have static public IP but am open to paying for it if it helps I have ordered a Edgerouter 4 that is to be delivered tomorrow. I am an engineer and I do software amongst other things, but I am not a systems or networking engineer. I don't do any CLI with networking equipment, but I do CLI other things so I'm sure I can pick it up quicker than most. My questions are: 1) I am planning to start with the dumb-switch bypass as it sounds very straightforward, however, I am concerned about having all of my outbound traffic reliant upon a cheap $25 switch. Will it drop or mis-manage packets? I have the switch already and a small UPS I plan to use. My priority is mostly in online FPS gaming, in that I'd like to keep latency and packet loss (mis-management) low with an Open NAT. 2) Assuming long-term I'd like to have something better than the dumb-switch approach, I'm seeing options to use a managed switch and swap VLANs, but I've also seen posts about getting certs from a NV gateway and deploying the authentication in some routers. Would I be able to do this with the Edgerouter-4? I couldn't find any hits for this hardware combo and cert spoofing. 3) Any reason to buy a static IP and put the gateway into some sort of passthrough mode. There are some videos on Youtube and such that hint at this being a "true-bridge" but then there are comments that suggest this is not. My gut says going through the gateway in anyway is a loss, but again, I only know enough to be dangerous and can't prove this out on my own.

[AT&T Fiber] $39.99/49.99 deal & equipment fee hideen in discount?

So other thread got locked instead of just keeping people on topic lol but this is related to it. I've never had the equipment fee from my legacy gig plan. The new plan for many of us without the fee upgrading didn't show/mention equipment so we assumed it's waived. Mine doesn't show it on a line item or anything funky either being waived but I noticed this. If you log into your account online and manage your plan it says $20 off for 12 months but when I click the link to show me the discount I see "HSIA_EDSP_$30 off 12 mos". Despite no equipment fee in the past I wonder if this means my rate goes up $30 after 12 months and not $20 or if it's $30 off for those with equipment so just a display thing and will only go up $20? Anyone else ever go and look on the site? (again the bill just says $20 off, no equipment mention).

[AT&T Fiber] Article linked on the front page says AT&T to stop offering DSL

https://www.ubergizmo.com/2020/10/att-stop-selling-dsl/ When I plug in my home address to their webpage though, it says: Great news! You can get our fast, reliable internet at your address. 50 Mbps Internet—plenty of speed to do your thing and more This definitely isn't gigabit fiber. What is it if not DSL? Should this be called "Fiber to someplace that's not where you live" (FTSPTNWYL)? Also, it's not "plenty of speed to do my thing". And hasn't been since probably a couple decades ago.

[VDSL] Ancient ATT UVerse VIP1200 Died, Swap Out Possible?

$

My parents actually still had an ancient VIP1200 from their original install 11 years ago running on HPNA that finally gave up the ghost (they have the very last HPNA gateway 5268AC). Is it still possible to get it swapped out for another VIP1200/HPNA box or will I have to try and install something else, such as a Wifi STB. If it has to be swapped out with a Wifi STB, can one initialize a Wifi STB over an ethernet connection and just skip the Wifi altogether? The reason I ask is that there is just no way that using Wifi for the TV is a viable option. The Gateway and this TV are literally at opposing ends of a 3500 sqft, single level house with 5+ walls in-between them. I would likely just use a Coax to Ethernet bridge since I know the Wifi STB's don't support HPNA (and the coax is good, RG6-U, solid copper center conductor), hence why I'm hoping I can initialize the box over ethernet. I wonder if ATT will want the VIP1200 back... I'm thinking they are going to tell me to chuck it in the trash.
