Thought this post might be useful, I searched around for some comparisons and couldn't get many.
Had Uverse for about 4-5 years now. It was a big upgrade over Comcast, and internet speed was reasonable (I was at 24/3) and uncapped.
Over the last year, service really started to degrade. Swapped in new boxes, but with 4HD streams the internet speeds really got clobbered.
Just switched to Comcast 50/10 for internet (at half the price I paid for U-Verse and more than double the speed). No caps now either. Locked in for a year without a contract for $29.99. Bought my own Docsis 3.0 modem for $60. I used a Asus RT-N66U with wireless disabled with my U-Verse setup, so that gateway feature wasn't an issue for me.
I thought about keeping U-Verse for TV... but I already ported my voice to Ooma so I would only have the single service. Comcast hasn't updated their STBs, and the new X1 doesn't have "anyroom" capability yet. So I couldn't get the U-Verse like functionality that I've gotten used to with multiple TVs in the house.
Decided to switch to Dish Network with two Hoppers & Sling. Many features better than U-Verse. Dish gives me 6 HD tuners total, which is good... but the management of the tuners is not as fluid as the system that U-Verse has on TV. The devices can see all recordings but you have to toggle which receiver it was recorded on in the menu.. which only takes a second but its not seamless.
On Demand selection on Dish is much better (including full HBO Go). The DVRs also work with PS3 media server/DLNA, have wifi, RF remotes. Also with 2TB*2=4TB of storage this thing is really a fully fledged media hub. Really leaps above anything U-Verse has out right now.
Overall happy with the switch. I think U-Verse is gonna need to go FTTH... I think the only thing better out there right now would be FioS/Google Fiber like service.
