http://www.fiercetelecom.com/story/atts-gfast-plans-could-boost-adtrans-revenues-says-cowen-and-company/2016-02-05 Saw this article today (also posted in friday morning links last week) and it states that at&t will be using G.fast using inferences from Adtran's 4Q 2015 earnings: "exited the year securing a major award by a Tier 1 carrier here in the U.S. for G.fast." I was wondering what at&t will use this technology for? I know they are committed to bringing gigapower fiber to 14mil homes, but is this their answer to getting gigabit speeds to MDUs? According to G.fast specifications, it looks like you need to be less than 100m (~300ft) from the fiber and have vectoring enabled just to have at least gigabit speeds. The article goes on to suggest that this may be used in rural areas, but I find that hard to believe since it seems uneconomical to bring this technology to rural areas due to the distance limitations. I can honestly only see this work in MDU type of situations where there are many living units in nearby proximity.
