Hello Guys, I just became a proud member of the DSLReports club. Let me start by wishing everyone a very happy new year.
I have a problem and would appreciate some advise from the members. I moved to a new apartment and tried to setup broadband, phone and TV service. Comcast was my first choice since they provide faster speed in my area, but they never were able to complete the installation after several attempts. Problems with the service cables outside the building or such.
AT&T was my only other choice but they don't provide triple play in my building, so I have DirecTV for video and AT&T vdsl for broadband and voip. My problem is that my apartment is only wired with RG-6 cable to every room including my office. I've already looked into the option of running a cat6 cable to my office where I want the modem and the phone connection but it's just not feasible with my layout. Recently an AT&T technician installed a 5031NV RG in a closet by the entry door where the phone service comes in. This was the easiest for him but its very limiting for me. I am presently using a couple of power-line adapters to bring service to my office, but I can't connect my fax printer and land line because the modem's location.
My question is, can I move the 5031NV RG from the closet to my office and connect it to the service through an existing RG-6 cable using baluns? This would be perfect for me. I asked the AT&T tech, nice guy, if he could do that, but he said he was not allowed to do that kind of connection, but gave me two baluns an said that I could try it on my own, it might work. I wanted some advice before I made any alterations. Thank you in advance.
