Using an Apple AirPort behind a 2Wire 3800HGV-B modem/router

I'm a U-verse user (video and high-speed Internet) with a 2Wire 3800HGV-B home gateway. For TV, the 2Wire gateway drives 3 set-top boxes. For Internet, I would like to use an Apple AirPort Extreme to drive Wi-Fi in the house instead of using the built-in Wi-Fi in the 2Wire gateway. The AirPort is in another room but I can easily run an Ethernet cable from the 2Wire to feed the Internet signal to the Airport. I'm told I should turn off the Wi-Fi signal coming out of the 2Wire, and also turn off the "router" functionality in the 2Wire, and use the router functionality in the AirPort instead. I'm told a "router behind a router" causes performance issues. Can anyone provide advice/instructions? So in summary, I want the 2Wire gateway to continue to act as modem and to drive the TV set-top boxes, but I want the AirPort to be the WiFi router. Thanks in advance for any advice.
