I was forced to migrate from POTS and DSL to Uverse last week. It went okay but I'm annoyed over the equipment fee. The rep handling the migration assured me that there would be no equipment fee but sure enough the first bill has a $7 equipment fee for the NVG510. It's waived for the first year along with some other discounts but still I never had an equipment fee with DSL.
So I called the support number on my bill to complain. A real person answered on the first ring. I think that threw me off my usual negotiating game! She explained that AT&T no longer sells modems (as of December 2014) and that the original rep should have told me this. Apparently the notes on my account only waive the fee for the first year. She suggests I call back next year when the promotion is up to see if there are any new deals I can be offered to continue waiving the equipment fee.
Am I being told the truth? Does AT&T only lease modems now? I really don't want to pay $7 per month for all the rest of time for this modem. Thanks!
