I just had U-Verse installed yesterday to replace my AT&T ADSL service. I went with the professional installation, because it was free.
I was expecting it to just take a few minutes, replacing my modem, and registering it, but I was told that they couldn't just replace my modem (which is what the AT&T self install video shows).
They said I needed a line right from where the phone lines enters the house. They replaced the small gray box on the house with a much larger one, and ran a home run line from there (I think CAT-5) to the new modem. I think the new box contains the DSL filter, because just for grins, I just tried removing a filter from a phone, and there was no noise. I don't know why they didn't mention that I didn't need the filters any more.
So now I'm wondering, Why couldn't they just replace the modem as shown in the self install instructions? Why did they spend hours installing a new box and cable?
