Hello techies,
I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I recently was told by a U-Verse technician that I could no longer use HPNA backfeeding to my set top boxes, and was forced to swap to Ethernet. This was not a huge deal, as I have network connectivity already at every TV. This is also when my problems started.
My setup is something like this:
Gateway
- Port 1: To 16-port switch
- Port 2: To Home office docking station
- Port 3: To home media server
- Port 4: Empty
16 port switch:
- Ports 1-7 go to bedrooms [some have two], where it will connect to another switch to allow multiple devices online.
- Port 8: Family room wall outlet --> switch
- Port 9: Basement entertainment system switch
- Port 10: Basement bedroom PC
All switches are of the Netgear gigabit family. There are some outlets, while active, that do not have anything plugged in on the other end. I assume this shouldn't cause any problems, yes?
Problems
Problem #1
When my computer in the master bedroom was turned off [same switch as MBR Television], I was unable to get clear television picture until 'Shutdown Wake On LAN' in Windows was disabled, or I unplugged the Ethernet cable. Has anyone else noticed this?
Problem #2
From time to time I notice that the wired network stops working (Internet and Television) for up to hours at a time (Yesterday and Today). Could there be any network feedback as I saw with something as simple as Wake on LAN that can cause this? Could unused Ethernet outlets cause problems? I want to be sure before AT&T decides to charge me another $99 and preach it's not a problem with their equipment.
