I was considering consolidating my AT&T landlines (main + fax) into my existing U-verse Internet service to lower my total costs. When I got to the point of placing the order via chat there was suddenly a need for a technician visit plus a $99 installation fee even though everything seems to be in place already. If I had moved only one landline, that wouldn't have been required. Anyone have any idea if there is a technical justification versus gouging/bureaucracy for AT&T to require a technician visit and the installation fee to set up two lines vs one? The phone jacks for two lines are already there on the gateway, so it seems like a software configuration issue. The last time they sent a technician out after I had to replace a failed gateway, he spent 10 mins on the phone with the next tier of support and the issue (IPv6-related) was resolved remotely without him touching any equipment just like I did on my own with the original gateway before it failed.
