589NVG and coax?

For the last couple of weeks my uverse internet and TV have been having issues dropping out. Usually not altogether but suddenly packet lose would be at >70% and TV viewing would be hindered..... cannot change channel, record etc. A power cycle of my 3801 gateway was the only way to resolve this..... then within in the next day or so the issue would reoccur. So I called uverse - they wanted to ship me a new gateway, I agreed. I will not get in to ATT shipping delays, but today I finally received my new hardware.... a NVG589. I plug in the new box and wait 25min - no signal..... just flashing red broadband lights. Power cycle after 30min, same thing. Call uverse, get transferred to a few different people because the first techs are VERY confused as to why I have a coax cable supplying my signal. Supervisor eventually takes over and also believes this is weird, but he thinks it should work. He advises me to change the "broadband source override" setting in the router to "Auto". We do this and reboot - same issue. Two flashing red broadband lights. He advises this is all that can be done and a tech will have to manually set this box up, or more than likely just replace it with an older 3801 again. So I currently have an appointment setup for a couple days from now but I am unsure if I will be able to get off work at the scheduled time. Is there anything else I can do to try and get this new router to sync over a coax connection without the need for a tech to come out? I have three uverse HD receivers and 24/5 internet speeds, which have always worked great over the coax. Is it really that uncommon that uverse cannot support a coax connection at all or even configure a new router to work with it? Even the NVG589 self replacement instructions mention moving coax over to it..... did I just get a bad box? Any information or steps to try would be appreciated - I am currently limping by on my 3801. It needs reset about twice a day at this point.... but when it's working it's working great.
