Ebay modem - Authentication?

Hi all, Just a sanity check here. I took a big gamble and bought an NVG589 used off of ebay to swap out with my old crappy (rented) 2Wire 3800 (I have no TV nor voice service nor am I pair bonded so I know I am eligible to purchase equipment). I know this was quite possibly a really dumb move but I felt like giving it a try. So I was prepared for two possible outcomes: 1. It wouldn't work at all 2. It would work but require me to sign in to a captive portal to "provision" it for my u-verse account Instead, what happened was I swapped out my 2Wire 3800 and plugged in the NVG589, fired it up and after about a 5 minute wait for it to fully boot the Broadband 1 and Service LEDs lit up steady and I hopped on its wifi network... aaaand I appear to have full web access, just like that (I was never presented with any captive portal). So I'm really curious now. Does this modem "know" it's on my U-verse account just by virtue of being plugged into my line? Or am I actually using the U-verse account of the person on ebay who sold this to me? Sorry I'm fairly ignorant of how U-verse authentication works. I know like with ye olde ADSL it was all dependent upon a PPPoE login within the modem and with cable modems you have to tell the Cable Co the MAC ID of the modem you're using. So with U-verse how exactly is this modem authenticating and is there any way (short of calling AT&T) for me to know if it's using my account or not? Thanks for any light you can shed on this. P.S. If I am indeed all set and using the NVG589 with my account, can I just bring down this old 2Wire 3800 to the local UPS store and ship it back in order to have the monthly equipment fee removed from my account or does that require calling in first?
