Moving From DSL to Uverse

Hello, I live in a semi rural neighborhood in Northern San Diego County with the only option being DSL. After years of trouble shooting I finally achieved reliable service by installing a splitter at the network box (with the help of a sympathetic tech) and then running dedicated Ethernet from the box to my LAN switch. I use a NetGear modem/router to handle my traffic. For the last few weeks I've been talking to the field techs as they ran fiber to a local distribution panel about 1 mile from my house. I'm told that Uverse will be "available" in a few weeks, but of course I don't know how long it will take for the business office to begin accepting new customers. I would be grateful for pointers to technical background on what I will need to do on my end to accept this service. Specifically, (i) does my splitter become obsolete, or is this used to isolate the Uverse line coming in? (2) Can I run the service through my switch, or will I be limited to a dedicated port for the modem connection? (iii) What happens to all of our existing Yahoo mail accounts? Am I better off selecting the Uverse modem/router combination, or installing a separate router? Those of us who live in this part of the world have experienced the collapse of service whenever we get a serious rainfall (been a while ...). The teleco installers years ago had never heard of rain, so whenever we get some mild precipitation they call it a "disaster" to justify the service interruption. Can we expect the same vulnerability with this service? Thanks to all for your service over the years,
