So, I have noticed in the evenings my downstream speed will drop from the 12MBit I am supposed to receive to less than 3MBit. Upstream is not nearly as affected. I've even gone through the trouble of disconnecting all equipment behind the RG, disabling wireless, and running the same speed tests with the same results.
This is not every evening, but normally on the weekends, around 7:30 pm, when part of my 2.5 year old's normal bedtime routine is to watch a 'Thomas' on PBS Kids. You can imagine how well it goes over when there isn't enough available bandwidth. Is there a way to figure out where this network bottleneck is? I know it's not my drop, as the RG's stats page show...
During this last speed degradation, at right about 7:30 PM CST Sunday April 13th, I ran several speedtests with a tech on the phone, all came back under 3 MBit. Out of curiosity I ran a traceroute to hostirian (our local speedtest facility) and found my traffic is routed from St. Louis to Dallas to Denver, and then back to St. Louis. I then traced to pbskids.org and found, again, routing down to dallas then back up to New Jersey. Do all roads lead to Dallas?
