As mentioned in another post, on Friday I am having U-verse installed. For a while I have worked on rewiring my house with new Cat-3 (POTS), RG-6 Quad Shield coax and Cat-5e wiring. Everything is routed to a media center panel (Leviton) that I mounted on a foundation wall near the CB panel where all the services enter the house.
I am hoping to configure things as shown on the attached graphic. Wiring is routed for all but the wireless access point. I would like the RG mounted in the media center panel with the WiFi function disabled/turned off.
While I have learned a lot over the years and want to learn more. The one thing that escapes me is if my placement (proposed) of an Ethernet switch is the correct device choice. Since the RG has a router built into it will a switch plugged into one of the RGs ports work to connect the home network to the Internet via the RG? OR do I need to put in a router in the place of the switch and plug that into the RG?
I used to be more in tune to the latest hardware. However, over the years I've become out of touch with what the good stuff is :) Any suggestions to help me narrow down the choice of equipment required to achieve my setup would be appreciated.
Thanks a bunch,
Stan
