Getting a separate Wireless Router connected to NVG589

OK, I can't take the wireless issue with this modem anylonger and have ordered a new wireless router. The Wireless signal from the NVG589 is awful. I had no issues with the old modem/setup I had. I regret this 'upgrade' to the power tier. I tested with EVERYTHING ELSE OFF in the house and unplugged all ethernet connections . I put my laptop right in front of the modem, did test from SpeedTest.net, and I barely get 15 mbps. I have the power tier that is supposed to be 45mbps. I then connected the laptop by Ethernet directly to the modem, and I actually get over the 45mbps oddly enough. So, when I get the new wireless router (NETGEAR WNDR4300), is there anything special settings-wise I need to do to either the NVG589 or the new router to make all work nicely? I am not doing on-line games. Just want somewhat consistent internet in the house! I have connected to the NVG589: 1 desktop - ethernet 1 work laptop - ethernet 1 Cisco router for the 2 wireless STB's I have in the house - ethernet 1 Powerline adapter (speeds are awful BTW) - ethernet 1 AppleTV - connected by ethernet to the back of my DVR VIP2250 (works perfectly) 1 Personal laptop - wireless 1 Roomate Desktop - wireless 1 Roomate work Laptop - connected to the Powerline adapter 2 cell phones I am a novice, so please tread lightly!
