3800HGV-B and Secondary Router

Just had U-Verse installed in a new apartment. I'm entirely new to AT&T period, so I had some questions. The 3800 doesn't even have n wireless, so I will be adding my own wireless router for sure. My plan is to simply add it as a bridge to supply WiFi instead of letting the 3800 do it. However, I was wondering if someone could explain to me the structure of the network. Is the 3800 actually doing anything more than routing the network? There's the main fiber line that goes into some nondescript gray box and out comes Ethernet to the 3800 and then I've got an ISB7500 connected via Ethernet to that. Are the TV recordings stored in the ISB or the 3800? Could you potentially use any standard router in place of the 3800? Not that I necessarily am even interested in that, since it'd just be unnecessary work to config.
