I am getting ready to add ATT residential fiber to my home. All utilities in my neighborhood are underground. I've trenched a 2" conduit (buried 18") to ATT's handhole, complete with a pull string (Mule tape), which is near my alley. The conduit comes up near where my underground electrical service entrance is located. I also have a 2" conduit installed from that point to the center of my home where the rest of my networking gear resides, complete with a pull string (Mule tape). Conduit is so much better than the way that ATT's burial contractor just slits the sod and stuffs the armored fiber drops just a few inches down. That's just asking for fiber cuts.
It is also rumored that Spectrum may soon also have fiber available.
I've been told that ATT uses single mode SC/APC to SC/APC (green ends) and the same for Spectrum. I plan on measuring then ordering pre-terminated fiber. I would also like to have spare strands so if one goes bad, I can merely unplug and replug.
Given:
-I neither have the skills or tools to splice fiber.
-I have some fiber handling experience.
-I can terminate ethernet cables on a good day.
-I have installed ethernet drops in every room of my home. Some rooms have multiple drops. While Wi-Fi is great and keeps getting better, there's no beating a wired connection for reliability, throughput, and security.
-I am a fulltime WFH IT worker. I currently use Spectrum for my internet provided. It's usually rock steady but not always. I plan on adding ATT fiber, so I'll always have internet service. I don't game as I spend 8+ hours staring at a computer monitor. A dual WAN router/switch would probably be my next purchase.
I need some advice...
1. Should I order/install one cable for ATT and Spectrum to share, with multiple strands (say 6 strands) or should I order/install 2 cables (1 for ATT and 1 for Spectrum), with multiple strands (say 3 strands)? I know vendors usually do not work good together.
2. Please suggest a vendor for pre-terminated single mode SC/APC to SC/APC fiber, multiple strands, suitable for installation in PVC conduit. The PVC conduit is in a dry location but a good electrician knows that inside of PVC conduit is considered a damp location. Amazon for the win? Is fiber, fiber, no matter what brand? I like 3M for some reason.
3. Can someone suggest a surface wall mount interior fiber box for single mode SC/APC to SC/APC (green ends) fiber, suitable to contain the fiber cable with multiple strands? I plan on running a short jumper fiber between that box and whatever ONT that ATT provides. I assume the ONT will be a standalone box, much like a cable router (other than the input will be fiber and not coax).
